PIBA UPDATE
2006 has been an interesting year for PIBA.  We have strived and have successfully delivered programs to you, which are current for environmental health and safety, and faciliies professionals; beneficial to you, connect you directly with local and state regulators, and well within most organizations training budgets.   We have stayed on calendar with the exception of two events, and there has been a significant increase in attendance along with positive, and useful, feedback from you.  Our restructuring of delivering programs from one large committee has been received so positively and the feedback you have provided has been very encouraging as well as helpful as we go forward with event development.

Most of our programs that are a minimum of three hours have qualified you for Certification Maintenance (CM) points, which are requested from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) for EH&S Events.  The Board of Certified Safety Professionals offers Continuation of Certification (COC) points at a rate of 0.625 for every 1 ABIH CM point.  If you have received a certificate, but not the approval number, make sure you visit the website and select the correct link after you open the Events page.

CHANGES
Due to changes in the structure of PIBA, my last day will be this Thursday, November 30. The Board of Directors is proactively planning to transition operations to ensure that our programs are delivered as scheduled and you still get the benefits of your memberships.

As for me, I will miss you all very much!  I have been with PIBA for over nine years, and just over four years in my role as Executive Director.  I want to thank each of you for your participation and support over the years (of me and PIBA!).  Several of you have made my job here amusing and fun, and sometimes just funny, which I have appreciated over the years.  Many of you know that I have just completed a two-year graduate program at USF in Pubic Administration and have been considering my own transition at some point.  Right now I have the opportunity to do a little soul searching to ensure I go forward in the direction that suits both my career and personal goals, and I do relish this very much!  My employment with PIBA, and experience gained while working with all of you, learning what you do, being a conduit of connecting you with other public, private, and nonprofit entities, has all influenced in a positive way my direction going forward.  Thank you!

WHAT's AHEAD
I have one request of you going forward…Please be patient and support your Board of Directors as they work through this transition.  2007 Membership dues for the first quarter of the year will be sent out this week.  Nonprofits are not exempt from operating expenses and your dues are integral to the continued success of PIBA.  If you are not a member, consider joining.  I suspect that there will be more changes over the next year that will be good for the organization and your membership. If you are not already aware, PIBA began in the 1930’s and was incorporated in the 50’s. This is just the beginning of a new set of changes geared toward serving you along with your organizations.

The Program Events Committee has already put the 2007 Events calendar together and programs begin in February.  Some of the topics to be covered include:

o      Measuring What Matters

o      Regulatory Conference (originally scheduled for fall 2006)

o      Radiation Safety

o      Vapor Intrusion & Brownfield Properties

o      Hazardous Waste/DOT

o      Update on Building and Fire Codes

A full list can be accessed right here.  Remember, the more you participate, the more you gain tools to solve pressing problems, access to regulators focused on current and future issues, and networking opportunities between businesses and community.

A recent example of what how your membership can benefit you:  Within one week of the Energy event held in October, two of our members were able to use information learned that day, and received a combined total of $850,000.00 in funding to implement energy savings programs at their own facilities.

If you would like to get involved with PIBA as a member, perhaps join our Board of Directors, or Programs Committee, or just have questions, please contact any member of the Board. Their contact information is available on our website, www.piba.org.  I know they will be glad to hear from you.

Best Regards,
Kathleen Podrasky
PIBA Executive Director

PS - The PIBA Board will be hosting a going away party for me early in 2007 - stay tuned and they will let you know when and where!

Volunteer Opportunities at PIBA

How would you like to be part of our community, do neat things together, grow individually and with your peers? Our Program Events committee has openings for several volunteers to join. Our next meeting on November 6, 2006, 12n, here at PIBA, for a PIBA sponsored luncheon will reveiw our current operations, opportunities, and calendar for 2007.

Volunteering can assist in improving your leadership skills, networking, and also your industry knowledge skills to help you advance your career.  It often leads to Board of Director appointments and your organization is recognized at both levels.  Please contact PIBA Board Officer, VP of Program Development, Jackie Kryszak, for more information if you are interested, 925/833-0685, or jacqueline.kryszak@hp.com.
