Position and Duties
The Assistant/Associate Environmental Services Specialist position will be part of the Municipal Environmental Compliance program (MEC) which is housed in Environmental Services Department's (ESD) Environmental Compliance & Safety Division. The core service of the program is to provide technical support in the assessment, investigation, and cleanup of environmentally impaired or potentially impaired City properties/projects. MEC provides this general compliance expertise and support to various Citywide Departments and/or programs such as the SJ/SC Water Pollution Control Plant, Integrated Waste Management, Parks Recreation & Neighborhood Services, Public Works, and Planning among others. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Perform Environmental Site Assessments and general environmental due diligence for City property transactions or City projects;
- Develop sampling and analysis plans, conduct environmental field sampling activities (soil, groundwater and landfill gas), and provide guidance based on results for City projects;
- Conduct and oversee the operation and maintenance of several treatment and monitoring facilities;
- Provide technical support for the ongoing investigation, monitoring and cleanup of the City's Leaking Underground Storage Tank sites;
- Provide technical support for ongoing groundwater and landfill gas monitoring and other environmental compliance obligations for the City's closed landfills;
- Review technical reports and provide guidance for planned developments to ensure environmental compliance and public health and safety is addressed appropriately;
- Prepare various technical reports, organize data and files and develop standard operating procedures;
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, regulatory agencies, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, environmental studies or related field and at least one (1) year of professional environmental compliance experience.
Licensing Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license in the State of California may be required.
Desirable: Registration as a Registered Environmental Assessor.
