Founded in 1952 as the South San Francisco Business Concerns Group, PIBA has matured into the most well recognized community/industry collaborative in Silicon Valley. PIBAs original mission was to serve the local business community as it worked to understand and comply with actions by regulatory authorities to establish early stage environmental regulations.
In the late 1960s, as our member base expanded beyond South San Francisco, we adopted the name Peninsula Business and Industrial Association. At the same time, the Silicon Valley business community was maturing, as were environmental and health and safety (EH&S) agencies and their regulatory tools. PIBA established Standing committees to address these evolving issues, providing guidance to businesses in the areas of Environmental Action, Facilities and Operations, Waste Management, etc.
Throughout the intervening years, PIBA continued to deliver services and educating programs to its members, gradually incorporating regulators, legislators, municipal officials, and others into its increasingly community-focused activities. In the late 1990s acknowledging the growing international influence of the Silicon Valley community, PIBA became the Pacific Industrial and Business Association.
PIBA has continued during the early years of the new Century to evolve its mission and educational services, serving a broadening community of interests in Silicon Valley. We welcomed our first public agency members in 2000, and in that same year established a Standing committee on Sustainable Business Practices to complement the work of our other Standing Committees.
PIBA has continued with its core objective of Connecting Commerce and Community through its various other accomplishments:
- Forming a Task Force in 1996 to establish the first-generation electronics sector EH&S supply chain evaluation tool
- Establishing in 1993 a regional EH&S conference, which as matured to an international conference, convening annual since 1993, serving as the premier venue for sharing of best known practices from the private and public sector on EH&S compliance, performance, and leadership initiatives, and incorporating in 1999 Sustainability practices
- Establishing in 1997 the Annual Leadership Awards in the Environmental, health & Safety, and Sustainability categories, to recognize and celebrate the career contributions of our most innovative and eminent practitioners in these fields
In 2002, PIBA adopted a new Mission statement and once again is organizing itself to meet the new challenges facing our community and the citizens, educational institutions, and businesses making their homes here:
The Pacific Industrial and Business Association provides educational programs to link the community with representatives from the private sector, government, and academia to exchange ideas, concerns, information and best organizational practices. PIBA is committed to the well being and sustainability of the Bay Area Community, and to advancing educational dialogue to the shared benefit of all sectors of society.
This mission is accomplished through PIBA’s action committee network, and its other educational outreach programs.
We are devoted to continuing to provide service to these stakeholders in our second fifty years.
